Prof Saibal Roy has been awarded a visiting Chair Professorship in engineering by the Indian National Science Academy

In recognition of 20 years of research excellence in nanostructured materials/thin films and related technologies, Dr Saibal Roy of Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland, has been awarded the highly prestigious visiting Chair Professorship in engineering by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) – India’s foremost scientific body. He is one of just three scientists who will be honoured this year across all scientific disciplines.
Prof. Roy, Head of Micropower Systems and Nanomagnetics at Tyndall National Institute was awarded this honour after being nominated by senior government scientific advisors in India. During his visiting professorship, Dr Roy will be hosted by the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata, one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious research institutions and the former home of Nobel award winner for Physics, Professor C V Raman. The award will also include a grant for visiting other premier research and academic institutions over 2015 and 2016.
Kieran Drain, CEO, Tyndall National Institute congratulated Dr Roy on his achievement “Saibal Roy’s work in this area has earned him international recognition as a leader in his field. He has two global patents, one of which was licensed to INTEL. He is also responsible for securing over €6m in competitive research funding and has authored 7 book chapters and over 180 research papers for top-tier journals and conference proceedings. Saibal’s current work relates to enabling nanotechnologies for miniaturised power generation and conversion applications for the ever-expanding ICT devices industry.”
Prof. Saibal Roy: ‘I am truly honoured and humbled to receive this award from the INSA. The calibre of previous winners is indicative of the level of achievement it is to receive this accolade. To be considered a peer of such an incredible group of scientists is my privilege. I would also like to congratulate the other award winners this year, Dr Vincent Cauderlier of the City University, London in the area of mathematics, and Professor N Sinha, University of California, USA in the area of plant biology.
